Bishop's Advisory Committee (BAC)
The Episcopal Church is hierarchical in nature. There is a resemblance between the structure and governance of the church to the organization of the government of the United States. It causes one to wonder if the fact that several of our founding fathers were Anglican had any influence. Every congregation is a member of a diocese, and all the dioceses of the nine provinces make up the Episcopal Church in the United States of America (ECUSA).
St. Thomas is a mission rather than a parish. As such, officially Bishop Hanley holds all authority over our property, spiritual matters, and governance. He is our rector. However, he delegates this authority to our Vicar (vicarious representative of the Bishop), Father Fred.
The Bishop’s Advisory Council (BAC) is St. Thomas’ governing body. Members are elected at the annual meeting for three-year terms. The Vicar is the presiding officer, and there are two wardens. The Sr. Warden is support for the Vicar, and the Jr. Warden has responsibility for church property and buildings. There is also a treasurer and clerk. The BAC’s basic responsibilities are to represent the congregation in fulfilling the church’s mission, select a vicar, nominate new members of BAC, provide congregational leadership, and manage our resources and finances.
